Personal Statement

I graduated with a first class honors degree in Information Technology, Business Management and Language (German & French) from the University of York in July 2002. I have since spent ten months traveling around the world visiting countries in Asia, Australasia and South America (see my Round the World Trip pages). Having returned very recently, I am now seeking to start my career. My aim is to work for a company in which I can be part of an efficient, motivated and professional team that takes pride in positively contributing to the company.

As part of my degree I spent a year working in the e-Business department of CGNU plc, London. During this time I proved myself as a conscientious, committed and motivated employee capable of working with projects that deliver a real, tangible benefit to the company. I am proficient in the use of technology in the workplace and can demonstrate strong problem solving and team working skills. I feel confident that my personal skills and my propensity to learn allow me to become a valued member of any organization.

Work Experience

July 2002 - September 2002 ACPO Administration Assistant, ADT Fire & Security plc (Middlesex)
Assisted the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Administrator in the management and administration of a project to apply for Unique Reference Numbers for around 800 contracts, in order that their intruder alarm systems could be monitored by the Police. Involved the creation and maintenance of a large database plus liaison with the Service department and the use of basic administration skills.
July 2000 - September 2001 Project Analyst, Aviva plc (formerly CGNU plc) (London)
University industrial placement year (3rd year of degree).
Within the Knowledge Sharing team of CGNU’s e-Business Development department, my responsibilities included managing, supporting & developing a company-wide e-Business Intranet and managing & developing an organisation-wide inventory of c.300 e-Business projects. Alongside these activities I was involved in a large number of inter-departmental projects, including activities such as application development, corporate Intranet development, community building, peer reviews and e-Business strategy definition. I dealt with many people throughout the organisation, including people in overseas business units and members of the executive board.
August - December 1999 Cashier, Dixons Ltd (York)
I was responsible for all sales transactions and the end of day cashing up in both the town-centre and then the out-of-town stores. I interacted with the general public (often foreign tourists) and colleagues and dealt with varied queries (both face-to-face & via telephone).

1995 - 1999 Retail Assistant, Stop 'N' Shop (Surrey)
My part-time after-school and vacation work in a newsagent/general store consisted of till duties, shelf stocking, stock taking, cash handling and dealing with customer queries. I was often put in charge of the shop and staff, and assisted in the implementation of the store’s EPOS system.
1998 Margret’s Bauernlädchen (nr Münster, Germany) (one month)
In order to improve my German skills I worked on a German holiday farm for a month. Throughout the time there I worked in the farm shop and restaurant and looked after young holiday guests. As the clientele were German Nationals I spoke German throughout.

Interests and Achievements

Sport  
At university I participated in many extra-curricular activities, including co-founding the Karting Club and holding the positions of President of the Badminton Club for one year and Treasurer of the Karting Club for two years. I represented the university in badminton, go-karting, hockey & table tennis and participated casually in many other team and individual sports.
Travel  
After graduation I backpacked round the world for 10 months, visiting 16 countries in total within Asia, Australasia and South America. The wide range of cultures, societies, topologies and climates I experienced has given me a much better appreciation of the diverse world we live in and has increased my confidence in my ability to cope in any given situation, deal with unexpected challenges and relate to a wide range of people.
Other  
I am also a motorsport enthusiast and participate in local, national & international motor sport as both a competitor and a marshal. Other hobbies include amateur photography, maintaining my personal website (where I am constantly honing my web design and publishing skills in order to continually improve the site), going to the cinema, and socialising.
